EVALUATION OF THE MINERAL POTENTIAL OF THE ISLA DE LA JUVENTUD
Main Article Content
Abstract
The mapping of the mineral potential of the Isla de la Juventud was carried out using the geo-mathematical method of indexed overlay of evidence maps and the use of predictive models based on the mineral system concept. Descriptive-genetic models of mineral deposits and a large set of monothematic maps made from the initial available maps or created directly from primary information were used. The quantitative part of the potential assessment was carried out by the method of analogy with standard deposits. Three magmatic events and 4 mineral systems were recognized on the Isla de la Juventud. The existence of successive and spatially overlapping metallogenic epochs was a very favourable factor for the development of Au and Ag ores. It also contributed to the occurrence of metallic mineralization with a wide range of useful components: Mo, W, Sb (critical metals); Au, Ag (precious metals); Cu, Fe Zn, Co and possible ETR. The orogenic mineral system was the most important and presented a well-defined geochemical and metallogenic zonality (Mo-W-Cu-Au-Ag-Sb-Fe) governed by magmatic-tectonic control, both vertically and horizontally. The estimated supergene nodular Fe potential, the partial estimate of Au and Ag and the geological favourability for the presence of ETR deposits adsorbed on clays make the Isle of Youth weathering mantle a prime metallogenic target. The mineral potential evaluated on the Isle of Youth for metallic deposits is considerable.
