GUIDE TO LOCALITIES OF GEOLOGICAL INTEREST (GEOSITES) OF THE CITY OF HAVANA
Main Article Content
Abstract
Although a few geological sites in the country have been declared local monuments and due to their landscape or their historical importance and therefore form part of the national heritage, the vast majority are at the mercy of the needs or the will of individuals and/or communities that without adequate instruction on the values of each site can harm them, partially destroy them or make them disappear, as has already happened. In the city of Havana, despite the degree of urbanization that exists, 12 geological sites of interest have been recognized, not registered in the MINEM resolution that was published in the Official Gazette. Here, 13 geosites are recognized and recommended for the practice of geotourism, without attempting to take into account all that may exist. Four are Quaternary geosites, related to the glacieustatic and neotectonic processes of the Pleistocene that generated the formation of terrace fronts, at the corner of Avenidas 23 and Paseo, on Avenida de los Presidentes (G) and Calle 21; at the corners of 11th and 18th and 26th and 13th streets, among others, and also the stratotypes of the Vedado and Guanabo formations. The stratotypes of the Príncipe Formation and the Informal Unit, Urría, both from the Paleogene, are also found in the city; Cojímar, from the Middle Miocene, and La Cabaña and Guanabo.
