GEOLOGICAL-GEOMORPHOLOGICAL CONSTITUTION OF THE INSULAR SLOPE OF THE CUBAN MEGABLOCK. REVIEW OF PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE AND CONSIDERATIONS
Main Article Content
Abstract
A contribution is made to the geological-geomorphological knowledge of the insular slope of the Cuban archipelago, as the most extreme geomorphological unit towards its southern and northern edges, which separates it from the abyssal marine depths. For this purpose, the existing information acquired during research carried out for different purposes was reviewed, so that its reflection and synthesis in a single work can constitute an important reference for different applications, such as the 1: 50 000 geological and 1: 100 000 geomorphological cartographies, currently under development in the country. Among the main information provided are: 1)the depths of the upper and lower limits of the slope, which vary between 8-95 and 200-3500 m, respectively; 2) the differences resulting from the complex behaviour of the earth's crust between the southern, steep sides with very complex morphology and the north, where the slope is usually gentler and lateral morphological variations less pronounced and 3) the existing variety of relief forms on the slope wall in general, with a predominance of abrasive terraces and canyons, originating from neotectonic activity; as well as by the exogenous factors and processes characteristic of subaerial and marine environments, characteristic of the regressions and transgressions of the sea, which occurred since the formation of the slope and particularly during the Quaternary.
