LOS CASTILLEJOS MINING AREA. PROSPECTS FOR GOLD AND SILVER GOSSANS
Main Article Content
Abstract
The Los Castillejos mining district is located near Fomento, Sancti Spíritus province, in
the Los Pasos Formation, which features VMS Bimodal-Maphic deposits with sulphide
copper+sphalerite ores and Au-Ag contents. These deposits, although exploited, were
not evaluated as gossans for Au-Ag, being recently classified as virgin gossans due
to their low degree of study for gold and silver. The paper systematises and argues
several historical facts associated with these processes, contributing new elements
with possibilities for the integral exploitation of the deposit with the extraction of gold
and silver, and suggesting the need for geological research in the region. The analysis
carried out is a first approach to relevant aspects that need to be studied. The need to
reinterpret the information in the light of the advances in gossan studies and the increase
in the knowledge of geological activity, makes it necessary to direct the projection
of prospecting towards the identified virgin gossans, including the technical criteria
obtained from the work currently being carried out. New elements are provided that
argue for the inclusion of primary ores and also of the gossan, constituting a contribution
to scientific knowledge for future prospecting work, an objective whose evaluation must
be complemented. This research has a relevant current importance, because the price of
copper and gold in the international market has a vertiginous and sustained rise and it is
expected that there will be a great demand at world level in the next years.
