ANALYTICAL RESEARCH OF MINERALS CARRIERS OF RARE EARTH EARTHS AND ELEMENTS PLATINUM GROUP
Main Article Content
Abstract
This work shows the results of the REE -bearing mineral ore as well as the PGM (Platinum Group Minerals) studies carried out in order to systematize the use of microanalysis techniques for mineral research. Outcomes from the morphological and chemical characterization and the structural composition of both types of minerals are described. The main REE-bearing minerals identified were: monazite, cerianite, bastnaesite, and xenotime; while among the Platinum Group Mineral the particles and inclusions of ruthenium, osmium and iridium were described. The samples were picked out from different locations in the country and the obtained spectra became part of the analytical database, designed to support the identification of minerals in the Institute of Geology and Paleontology/Geological Survey of Cuba. The techniques used were SEM (scanning electron microscopy) with X-ray micro-analyzer [or EPMA – electron probe micro-analyzer] coupled and Micro-Raman Spectroscopy.
