The igneous activity of the paleogene in cretaceous terrains of eastern central Cuba (Part one)
Main Article Content
Abstract
The conception of the existence of Paleogene igneous activity in central-eastern Cuba, which has been reflected for the first time on a map of the region, dates back to the execution and analysis of the results of the 1:100 000 scale geological survey and its accompanying searches in the southern part of the then-called Camagüey Anticlinorium in the Martí-Victoria de Las Tunas region, completed in 1976. This was due both to the observation and analysis of field data and to the production of information prior to the document cited above. The detailed review of the information was obtained from the 1964 book Geología de Cuba and other earlier and later materials, which emphasize that these considerations had already been previously analyzed by other geologists (including some foreign ones). The existence of Paleogene magmatism within the boundaries of the Ciego de Ávila-Camagüey-Las Tunas territory is highlighted, based on geological and paleontological studies, in addition to the results of radiometric and mineralization studies collected at that time. The study presented confirms the continued existence of magmatism, which, according to current data, extends to the Eocene–Ypresian (Bartonian). For this reason, the upper part of the history of the development of magmatism in Central Eastern Cuba must be rewritten.
