Abstract

The paleomagnetic study of Quaternary rocks in Cuba is presented based on the conventional methodology of paleomagnetic investigations. The objective is the preparation of the Paleomagnetic Scale and the establishment of the Magnetostratigraphic Scheme of the Cuban formations. Regarding the methodology, oriented sampling of the different geological formations is carried out according to their lithological characteristics. 849 samples were taken in 27 outcrops in 9 Cuban provinces. The experimental physical treatment is carried out to obtain the primary components of the natural remanent magnetization in the rocks. For this, thermal demagnetization processes, by alternating magnetic field and by time, are used, as well as studies of magnetic saturation and its demagnetization by temperature. All this occurs in the presence of a magnetic vacuum. Chemical, mineralogical and spectrometric analyzes were carried out to support the research. The 28 paleomagnetic profiles were studied and the paleomagnetic Scale for Cuba was constructed and its comparison with the International Paleomagnetic Scales of Cox (1976) and for Central Europe. The positions of the magnetic poles during the Quaternary and the upper Pliocene are calculated. From the investigation of all the information obtained, it is possible to propose the Magnetostratigraphic Scheme for the Upper Pliocene and the Cuban Quaternary. Supporting criteria are offered on the neotectonics of the studied areas, as well as Glacioeustatism in the region.
