NEW GEOSITES AS GEOLOGICAL HERITAGE OF THE PROVINCE OF LAS TUNAS, CUBA

Abstract
During the planning of “Evaluation and diagnostic of Las Tunas province geosites for the protection and conservation of the geologic Patrimony Project”, manage by the Institute of Geology and Paleontology, were evaluated for their inclusion on the province inventory of geosites: 7 stratigraphic units recognized in the Stratigraphic Lexicon of Cuba and other 13 geosites were incorporated because the relevance given by the local specialists of the Ministry of Sciences (CITMA) and Protected Areas National System (SNAP) The geosites classification was carried out keeping in mind the values of parameters such as: Physical state of geosite, representativeness and scientific value, historical value, didactic importance, aesthetic value for teaching, and tourism, rarity, irrepetibility , vulnerability, size and accessibility. As a result of this analysis 14 new geosites were included in Geologic Patrimony catalog of the province, grouped in three main categories: 4 of category A, 9 of category B and 1 of category C. Among the geosites with higher evaluation Blue Lake and Ashtray Mangrove Swamp were proposed as Local Monument and the inclusion of Ashtray Mangrove Swamp in Protected Areas National System. A 1: 250 000 scale map in which location and geosites categories are represented is one of the results, as well as, an accompanying chart with category and actions proposed for their protection and conservation.
