GEOLOGICAL PROBLEMS OF THE SAFETY OF DAMS AND RESERVOIRS IN PANAMA: WESTERN BASIN (PART 2)
Main Article Content
Abstract
Geological structure, seismicity and volcanism, as well as palaeoseismology, palaeohydrology and neotectonics impose an important set of constraints on the management of geological, hydrological and structural safety of dams, reservoirs and water infrastructure works. On the example of two hydrological regions of exceptional importance: The Canal Basin and the Western Basins, some of these constraints on the safety of works and watershed management in seismically active areas are discussed. The second part of this contribution discusses the background of the problem and the geological situation of the western basins of Panama and the border with Costa Rica, concluding that the basins and their infrastructure are vulnerable to failure due to the current geological activity that produces earthquakes and volcanism.
