Implementation of a Digital Heritage Repository in the Institute of Geology and Paleontology

Abstract
The preservation of documentary heritage is essential for access to knowledge and the protection of historical memory. The National Center of Geological Information of the Institute of Geology and Paleontology, currently Geological Service of Cuba, has implemented a digital repository to safeguard valuable heritage documents and some of them are only in that institution; for the best organization and obtaining of results we worked in research project. The XABAL REPXOS tool was used as a method. The digitization of these documents guarantees their long-term preservation and facilitates their accessibility. This article describes the process of implementing the repository, from planning to execution, and analyzes the challenges and benefits of digitizing a selection of 125 heritage documents in the 1981-2000 period. The experience gained serves as a guide for future digital preservation initiatives in other institutions. This effort contributes to the democratization of knowledge and the protection of scientific and cultural heritage.
