GUIDE TO LOCALITIES OF GEOLOGICAL INTEREST (GEOSITES) OF THE CITY OF HAVANA GUÍA DE LOCALIDADES DE INTERÉS GEOLÓGICO (GEOSITIOS) DE LA CIUDAD DE LA HABANA Gutiérrez Domech , Manuel Roberto Pantaleón Vento, Guillermo Rosa Romeu , Adriana geositios geoturismo La Habana geosites geotourism Havana Although a few geological sites in the country have been declared local monuments and due to their landscape or their historical importance and therefore form part of the national heritage, the vast majority are at the mercy of the needs or the will of individuals and/or communities that without adequate instruction on the values of each site can harm them, partially destroy them or make them disappear, as has already happened. In the city of Havana, despite the degree of urbanization that exists, 12 geological sites of interest have been recognized, not registered in the MINEM resolution that was published in the Official Gazette. Here, 13 geosites are recognized and recommended for the practice of geotourism, without attempting to take into account all that may exist. Four are Quaternary geosites, related to the glacieustatic and neotectonic processes of the Pleistocene that generated the formation of terrace fronts, at the corner of Avenidas 23 and Paseo, on Avenida de los Presidentes (G) and Calle 21; at the corners of 11th and 18th and 26th and 13th streets, among others, and also the stratotypes of the Vedado and Guanabo formations. The stratotypes of the Príncipe Formation and the Informal Unit, Urría, both from the Paleogene, are also found in the city; Cojímar, from the Middle Miocene, and La Cabaña and Guanabo. Aunque pocos sitios geológicos del país han sido declarados monumentos locales y nacionales por su paisaje o su importancia histórica y por tanto forman parte del patrimonio nacional, la inmensa mayoría se encuentra a merced de las necesidades o de la voluntad de individuos y/o comunidades que sin una adecuada instrucción sobre los valores de cada sitio pueden dañarlos, destruirlos parcialmente o hacerlos desaparecer, como ya ha sucedido. En la ciudad de La Habana, a despecho del grado de urbanización que existe han sido reconocidos 12 sitios de interés geológicos, no registrados en la resolución del Minem que fue publicada en la Gaceta Oficial. Aquí se reconocen y recomiendan 13 geositios para la práctica del geoturismo, sin que se pretenda tener en consideración todos los que pudieran existir. Cuatro son geositios del Cuaternario, relacionados con los procesos glacieustáticos y neotectónicos del Pleistoceno que generaron la formación de frentes de terraza, en la esquina de las Avenidas 23 y Paseo, en Avenida de los Presidentes (G) y calle 21; en las esquinas de las calles 11 y 18 y 26 y 13, entre otros, y además los estratotipos de las formaciones Vedado y Guanabo. También se encuentran en la ciudad los estratotipos de la Formación Príncipe y de la Unidad Informal, Urría, ambas del Paleógeno; Cojímar, del Mioceno Medio, y La Cabaña y Guanabo.
