DOES CUBAN METAL AND NON-METALLIC WEALTH CONSTITUTE SOMETHING IMPORTANT FOR PROSPEROUS AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT? ¿CONSTITUYE LA RIQUEZA METÁLICA Y NO METÁLICA CUBANA ALGO IMPORTANTE PARA EL DESARROLLO PRÓSPERO Y SOSTENIBLE? Capote Marrero, Carbeny Cruz Pacheco, María Santa aprovechamiento racional Cuba riqueza mineral sostenibilidad rational use mineral wealth sustainability Cuba Sustainability demands a balance between economic growth, population and optimal use of natural resources. But, the national metallic and non-metallic mineral wealth contains multiple opportunities not considered in the Planning. Part of the results of this study, essentially a bibliographic analysis, consists of identifying and discussing the possible causes of this underestimation. There are four: 1- Not a few consider that these mineral resources are very limited. 2- The responsibility to protect and use them rationally is in the hands of some decision makers, and not all. 3- In the Planning does not take into account the information on Mineral Potential. 4- Prospecting is not effective. Other results of the study are to give clear examples of underestimation, starting with gold. Although this metal occupies a relevant place in the prospective expenses, the essential increase of resources from new discoveries is not obtained. However, more than 11 favorable sectors are known where to serch but which are out of any prospecting program. In the non-metallic ones, there is the Macambo jadeitite (Guantánamo) and the Fiji type water from Lesca (Camagüey). The first is a globally appreciated subject and would constitute one of the few deposits in the Western Hemisphere; however, after 25 years of detected, there are no identified resources. And the second occurrence could be a national source of one of the most beneficial and valued mineral waters of the planet, but, after more than 30 years of localized, there are no identified resources. The study ends with recommendations to achieve the proper use of this heritage. La Sostenibilidad exige un equilibrio entre crecimiento económico, población y aprovechamiento óptimo de los recursos naturales. Pero, la riqueza mineral metálica y no metálica nacional contiene múltiples oportunidades no consideradas en la Planificación. Parte de los resultados de este estudio, en esencia un análisis bibliográfico, consiste en identificar y discutir las posibles causas de esta subestimación. Son cuatro: 1- No pocos consideran que esos recursos minerales son muy limitados. 2- La responsabilidad de protegerlos y usarlos racionalmente está en manos de algunos decisores, y no de todos. 3- En la Planificación no se tiene en cuenta la información sobre Potencial Mineral. 4- La prospección no es eficaz. Otros resultados del estudio son exponer ejemplos claros de subestimación, comenzándose por el oro. Si bien este metal ocupa un lugar relevante en los gastos prospectivos, no se obtiene el imprescindible aumento de recursos a partir de nuevos descubrimientos. Sin embargo, se conocen más de 11 sectores donde buscar que han estado y están fuera de cualquier programa. En los no metálicos están la jadeitita Macambo (Guantánamo) y el agua tipo Fiyi de Lesca (Camagüey). La primera es una materia globalmente muy apreciada y constituiría uno de los escasos yacimientos del Hemisferio Occidental; no obstante, a 25 años de detectada no hay recursos identificados. Y la segunda, podría ser fuente nacional de una de las aguas minerales más beneficiosas y valoradas del Planeta, pero, después de más de 30 años de localizada, tampoco se tienen recursos identificados. El estudio finaliza con recomendaciones para alcanzar el adecuado aprovechamiento de este patrimonio.
