NEW GEOSITES AS GEOLOGICAL HERITAGE OF THE PROVINCE OF LAS TUNAS, CUBA NUEVOS GEOSITIOS COMO PATRIMONIO GEOLÓGICO DE LA PROVINCIA LAS TUNAS, CUBA Roberto Gutiérrez, Manuel Jesús Pantaleón, Guillermo Bernal Rodriguez, Luís Ramón Olano Labrada, Richard Alfonso Carabeo, José Maria Cardoso, Juana Roque Marrero, Fidel patrimonio geológico geositios Las Tunas Cuba geological heritage geosites Las Tunas Cuba During the planning of “Evaluation and diagnostic of Las Tunas province geosites for the protection and conservation of the geologic Patrimony Project”, manage by the Institute of Geology and Paleontology, were evaluated for their inclusion on the province inventory of geosites: 7 stratigraphic units recognized in the Stratigraphic Lexicon of Cuba and other 13 geosites were incorporated because the relevance given by the local specialists of the Ministry of Sciences (CITMA) and Protected Areas National System (SNAP) The geosites classification was carried out keeping in mind the values of parameters such as: Physical state of geosite, representativeness and scientific value, historical value, didactic importance, aesthetic value for teaching, and tourism, rarity, irrepetibility , vulnerability, size and accessibility. As a result of this analysis 14 new geosites were included in Geologic Patrimony catalog of the province, grouped in three main categories: 4 of category A, 9 of category B and 1 of category C. Among the geosites with higher evaluation Blue Lake and Ashtray Mangrove Swamp were proposed as Local Monument and the inclusion of Ashtray Mangrove Swamp in Protected Areas National System. A 1: 250 000 scale map in which location and geosites categories are represented is one of the results, as well as, an accompanying chart with category and actions proposed for their protection and conservation. Durante el desarrollo del Proyecto “Evaluación y diagnóstico de geo- sitios de la provincia Las Tunas para la protección y conservación del Patrimonio geológico” que fue realizado por el Instituto de Geología y Paleontología, se evaluaron para su incorporación dentro del inventario de los sitios de interés geológico de la provincia, 7 unidades litoestratigráficas reconocidas en el Léxico Estratigráfico de Cuba y otros 13 geositios que fueron incorporados por la relevancia que le concedieron especialistas del CITMA y SNAP de la Provincia. La clasificación de los geositios se realizó teniendo en cuenta la ponderación de parámetros tales como: estado físico del geositio, representatividad y valor científico, valor histórico, importancia didáctica, valor estético para la enseñanza y el turismo, rareza, irrepetibilidad, vulnerabilidad, tamaño y accesibilidad. Como resultado de este análisis se incluyeron 14 nuevos geositios en el Patrimonio Geológico de la provincia, agrupados en tres categorías principales: 4 de categoría A , 9 de categoría B y 1 de categoría C. Entre los geositios con mejor evaluación fueron propuestos Lago Azul y Manglar del Cenicero como Monumento Local y se propone la inclusión de Manglar del Cenicero en el Sistema Nacional de Áreas Protegidas. Un mapa a escala 1: 250 000 en el cual se representan la ubicación y las categorías de los geositios es uno de los resultados, así como una tabla acompañante con la categoría y las acciones propuestas para su protección y conservación.
