Canal de Panamá cuenca seguridad de presas terremotos volcanes Panama Canal basin dam safety earthquake volcanism Geological structure, seismicity and volcanism, as well as palaeoseismology, palaeohydrology and neotectonics impose an important set of constraints on the management of geological, hydrological and structural safety of dams, reservoirs and water infrastructure works. On the example of two hydrological regions of exceptional importance: The Canal Basin and the Western Basins, some of these constraints on the safety of works and watershed management in seismically active areas are discussed. The second part of this contribution discusses the background of the problem and the geological situation of the western basins of Panama and the border with Costa Rica, concluding that the basins and their infrastructure are vulnerable to failure due to the current geological activity that produces earthquakes and volcanism. La estructura geológica, la sísmica y el vulcanismo, así como la paleosismología, paleohidrología y neotectónica imponen un grupo importante de restricciones en la gestión de la seguridad geológica, hidrológica y estructural de las presas, embalses y obras de infraestructura hidráulica. En el ejemplo de dos regiones hidrológicas de excepcional importancia: la Cuenca del Canal y las Cuencas del Oeste, se discuten algunas de estas limitaciones sobre la seguridad de las obras y la gestión de las cuencas hidrológicas en zonas sísmicas activas. En la segunda parte de esta contribución se discuten los antecedentes del problema y la situación geológica de las cuencas del Oeste de Panamá y la frontera con Costa Rica, concluyéndose que las cuencas y su infraestructura son vulnerables a fallar debido a la actividad geológica actual que produce sismos y vulcanismos.
